Hello there,
Nice to meet you, I’m Anya! While origionally from Annapolis, Maryland, I am now a New York City based performer. There are many words I could use to describe myself: Jewish, Queer, short, talkative, perfectionist- just to name a few, but I’d rather tell you about the things I love. The Sims 4, the color orange, summer, giving exact change, Come From Away, folk-guitar music, coming of age films. All these things and more fuel me in my love of complex storytelling. Even as a dancer, I focus primarily on story driven contemporary ballet. I am a person who gets the same satisfaction from giving exact change as I do successfully completing a functional analysis of my music. From performing a Handel art song as I do songs from “Beetlejuice”.
I surprisingly did not grow up in a musical household. The majority of my family members hold a doctorate in the sciences or mathematics, and there was never really music playing in the kitchen in my childhood. I distinctly remember at ten years old, a family friend took me to see a community theater production of “Annie”. It had never occured to me that actors on TV were people with lives, but when I saw the children my own age on stage in front of me all I could think was “What are they thinking about right now? What must it feel like to be someone else in front of all these people?”. And just like that, I was hooked on the process of theater.
When not singing, I am very passionate about working with children! I have completed and exceeded the requirements for a minor in Child and Adolescent Mental Health studies, been working as a nanny the last three years, and taught voice lessons to elementary age children as part of the Musical Mentors Collaborative! I’ve always been drawn to children and their potential, and truly believe its a gift to get to play any role in a child's life. Not to mention, they keep me on my feet at all times! Becoming a voice teacher is something I’ve wanted since I was eleven - the first year I started taking lessons myself.
